Oregon Freeze Dry began marketing Mountain House backpacking/ recreational foods in the late-1960s. Since Oregon Freeze Dry is the largest freeze drying company in the US, it is easy to understand why Mountain House is the quality leader in the backpacking foods industry. In fact, Oregon Freeze Dry is the only manufacturer in the industry which owns and operates its own, USDA approved, freeze drying plants and packaging facilities.

Other brands of backpacking foods mix freeze dried and dehydrated ingredients in their entrees. Dehydrated ingredients cost less and do not have the superior flavor that freeze dried ingredients do. Dehydrated foods often require soaking and long cook times, while freeze dried entrees require only the addition of boiling water and a maximum set time of 10 minutes.

The Mountain House product line consists of 50 products, including single-serve, double-serve, and four-serve entrees. The most popular sellers are the double-serve entrees. Their pouches include a convenient inner-preparation pouch, which is the most convenient method of preparing food on the trail.
