Range Finder is a feature on Metolius Cams size 2 and larger that helps you assess placement quality, thereby making the cams safer and easier to place. It's a powerful tool to let you know where you are within a cam's range. Just read the gauge where the cam lobe contacts the rock.
- Green Zone: Green means go! A placement in the Green Zone indicates that you have chosen the optimally sized unit.
- Yellow Zone: Caution! This is a decent placement but the next size up would be solidly in the Green Zone, resulting in a more stable placement. Use placements in the Yellow Zone if nothing else is available or if you need to conserve the next size up for a critical placement higher up.
- Red Zone: Stop! This is a very poor placement. Use a larger unit or find another placement. Only use a placement in the Red Zone if nothing else is available.
With their optimized logarithmic spiral and thicker cam faces on each individual cam, Power Cam 4 cam units have increased surface area and develop more outward force. This provides increased holding power throughout the cam's active range. Hence, the name Power Cam.
Metolius traded a bit of range for what they feel is the most important attribute of a cam - that it stays put when you fall on it! Like the amazing TCU, the Power Cam is built on the same stainless steel U-shaped body, giving you unparalleled control of handling and placement.
INCLUDES BOTTLE OF CAM LUBE!
The all-around workhorse of the Metolius line, Power Cams are at home on any type of rock, from the big walls of Squamish granite to the desert towers of Utah Sandstone, from mountainous Rockies limestone to super-hard Gunks quartzite. They're also perfect whether you're free or aid climbing, high in the mountains or at a roadside crag. With our new Range Finder feature giving you instant placement feedback, they are easier and safer to place than ever! Extensive testing in real rock has convinced us to design Power Cams to maximize holding power. We achieve greater holding power by reducing the cam angle slightly so the cam lobes push out harder against the walls of the placement. We've also widened the faces of the cam lobes to get more grip and to spread the force of a fall over a larger area.
The best all-around climbing cam is now significantly lighter and more versatile due to our new Direct Axle Technology (DAT). DAT reduces head-width thereby increasing placement options and user visibility. Our optimized cam angle focuses on holding power and the wide beefy cam lobes are designed for extra grip. Our Range Finder system tells you at a glance whether you have chosen the optimum sized unit. Super lightweight, strong and stable, Ultralight Power Cams make the ultimate foundation for any climbers rack!
